java web start instead of applet

The are quite many differences. The main difference between an applet and
Java Web Start (JWS) application is that for an applet to work you have to
launch it from a web page on a web server everytime you run the application.
JWS application is downloaded automatically and can be launched without the
need for a connection to the web server with application. Simply if the web
server hosting applet is down you will not be able to use it. JWS will work.

See http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/architecture.html for more
details.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, what is this Java Web Start? The
page on sun.com says:

# JavaTM Web Start software gives you the power to launch full-featured
# applications with a single click from your Web browser.

But, MindTerm and other Java applications do this already? What's the
difference between using this thing and the normal way?
