I am having a problem with X11 forwarding from a Linux client to a Linux
server (or Irix)

Mindterm 2.4.1
Sun Java 1.3 and 1.4
openssh-3.1 server (and others)

The DISPLAY variable is set as expected and xauth is run to create
a cookie, but I get

Xlib: connection to "localhost:17.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 jey
Error" Can't open display: localhost:17.0

"xauth list" gives:

myhost/unix:17 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 af71c...

If I do "xauth remove myhost/unix:17 ; xterm" I get
  java.io.IOException: No X11 authentication cookie
on the command line (if I start mindterm with java -cp)
while if I change the xauth cookie I get
  java.io.IOException: X11 authentication failed

X11 works between these systems with OpenSSH clients.

I confess I don't 100% understand how X11 forwarding works
so I'm a bit stuck. Is there some trick or configuration I am missing ?
